Bone

In this book, author, Fae M. Ng, uses different occupations to describe each character’s characteristic indirectly. One’s occupation can easy to see what kind of person she or he is, and it relates to one’s culture, too. Each character’s occupation as a symbol in Bone reminds the reader that their careers were related to their personality.

Mah, as a traditional Chinese woman, is supposed to stay home, and take care of her family. She really didn’t have any skills to find job. But after she came to the United States, Tommie taught her sewing. So, at first, she worked as a sewing lady, and later on, she became a baby sitter. Either sewing or baby sitting, one should be care the stuff around he or her, and pay more attention. Relate to her family in this novel, Mah wrote everything about Grandpa leong, and gave it to Leila without any conversation. Another one is after Leila came back from New York, Mah handed her a mug of Boo nai. That means she did care her family. Therefore, her occupation can exactly reflect her characteristic and personality.

Leon was a sailor that was always shipping to everywhere, and so he had leave his family often. Also, because of his job, he seldom came back home, and spent time will his family. ‘ Leon lost. Leon found.”(p.62) Leon always went away without any notice, he escaped all the troubles. For example, after he failed to take the social security, he went back to be a sailor. He didn’t even think of another solution to solve the problems; he just involved it, and left the troubles. Also, he tried to be a master to hold a shop, neither grocery nor laundry, he can’t hold it for a long time. It’s because he didn’t focus on the shop, like he didn’t look after the laundry, so he lost all the money. So, he characteristic was like go far way from troubles as his job, far away from home.

Mason is a mechanics that help people to repair the car. A Leila’s boyfriend, he really is a good and sweet guy. “ Mason offered to put the lightsin, so we drove to the Baby Store early the next morning.” (p.54) and one time, Leon went to Mason’ s work place and wanted him to go to the Chinese cemetery with Leon. Mason knew what Leila and her family need and want without telling. Also, he helped Leila’s family to repair the relationship as he did a mechanics to repair the car. For instance, he let Leila went back to live with Mah; Mah needs Leila, Although Mason really loved Leila stay with him, he still let her go. Mason made allowances for everything people did, and try hid best to solve the problem in Leila’s family.

Each character is totally different. Mah worked as a sewing lady can reflect that she was a careful woman that pays many attentions on her family. Then, Leon as a sailor that needed leave his home and went far away. He did the samething in his family, when he got any troubles or problems; he went away and escaped his family. He just likes the coward. But Mason is a very sweet and good guy that always helped Leila’s family and helps them repair the relationship between each family member. As his job, mechanics, he needed to repair the car. Therefore, each occupation can easy see one’s characteristic and personality.

Bilingual History

May 19th, 2006 by sukiwong in Uncategorized · No Comments

My name is Marco and I am a bilingual person that can speak, read, and write Chinese and English. Although I know both languages, my primary language is Chinese. Since I was born, there is only one language that I have heard in my house, this is Chinese. Therefore, it could have some problem for me to learn other languages.

I learned Chinese and English both since I was in preschool. At that time, Hong Kong was under British control, so all the kids need to study English. I remembered that the first thing I learned for English is the “ABC” song; I think everybody should know how to sing it. For me, it’s so difficult to remember all the English that I have learned in school; I always speak in Chinese. Don’t think Chinese is so easy to learn, Chinese not like the English letter, just have 26letters, and all the words are make of these words. Chinese makes of symbol, if you don’t know how to read Chinese, you can’t even know what is this. Granted that is hard to learn for the second language people, as I’m an English second language person, I need to do more practices in English.

As an English second language learner, my entire mind is Chinese. If someone says something to me, I will translate to Chinese. But it’s hard to translate Chinese to English when I need to answer the question because my English vocabulary is not good enough to solve it. There are many Chinese words can’t translate to English, like dim-sum, it sounds like the Chinese pronunciation. So, not all the Chinese’s words can translate to English, and this what problem I ‘m facing in my life.

For me, I like English more than Chinese because it‘s more useful in the world. English is the main language in the world; we always use English to communicate with each other in other countries. Everybody knows that English is a universal language; we can use it in every country. Also, I figure out that the English is so interesting, like use different suffix in the same root, it will have the different meaning. For example, the root is “phobia” that means fear of a particular thing. When I add some suffix like acro-, xeno-, or clanstro-, it will get the more specific meaning of phobia. Another example: add the “un” before happy, it’s completely change the meaning from pleased to sad. Therefore, English is a changeable language that changes the meaning easily by adding some suffix.

So for me to learn either Chinese or English, I must start at the young age. When the children were just the little kids, they learned every thing easily; people just show the kids one time, they will really get it. So, that’s why I speak Chinese fluently. I think as a bilingual person, it must have one better language than another. That’s hard to get the same level for both language because either one is the primary language you wouldn’t forget it.

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and influential figures of the modern era. His theories changed the world of physics, the study of matter and energy and how they interact. He also showed how everything moves, like from the tiniest particles to the largest planets. And he was what’s known as a theoretical physicist because he used math to explain what he and other scientists observed in the world around them. As what he did for us, it gave many ideas to the new scientists to study and get more and more improvement in the world.
Albert Einstein was born at Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879. He was a heavy, tubby baby with a huge, misshapen head. Since he hardly talked, his parents, Herman and Pauline Einstein worried about their son. But the most important thing their parents didn’t know was that Einstein had decided he wouldn’t speak until he could talk in whole sentences. As he grew, he was a solitary child who didn’t enjoy playing with other children. Because his father’s business has some trouble, so Einstein dropped out school to join his family. Then at the age of 17, Einstein began a 4 year course to teach math and physics in the famous Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. It’s not easy to attend in that school, he had already failed the test before. So, his childhood was not really well as the same age children.
Einstein was happy at the patent office because he liked inventions and their creations. He was an incredible man that had written four articles. The first one is about the existence of atoms and molecules. Another paper was about light waves, although physicists already knew that light is a form of energy made of tiny particles, Einstein argued that light travels both as a particles and a wave. But the most interesting part he realized was time, distances and mass can change, it just depends on how fast you are moving. So he called this paper the “Special Theory of Relativity.” Because of this idea, the famous equation E=mc2 came onto being famous. His career life was pretty good at that time; he became a professor for different universities. And his theory of relativity was confirmed by a solar eclipse, so he became world famous. But he was not proud of what he had done, he still worked very hard. And he won lots of physics awards by his amazing theory.
In late 1932, Einstein left Germany and moved to the United States. Five years later, World War II broke out, and Einstein horrified wrote a letter to the President of the United States about a powerful weapon, the atom bomb, which could take over the world. Like the destructive atom bombs that the United States had been dropped on Japan, and almost 200,000 people were injured or killed in the cities of Hiroshima and, Nagasaki. Although he didn’t help the project of making an atom bomb, the U.S was successful to make the atom bomb and dropped two of them in Japan. It showed people the atom bomb was a power weapon, and Einstein felt guilty that he sent this letter to the President to happen this unforgettable event in history. He had made the greatest mistake in his life, so he hard worked harder than ever for world peace, for example, he had supported the United Nations and spoke out about the rights of black people and other minorities.
Although Einstein had a successful career, his love story was not that prefect. He and his first wife, Mileva, were married in Bern in 1903; they had two children, Hans and Eduard. Everyone would think they were a wonderful family, but Einstein just worked on his job and forgot about his family. Therefore, they separated in 1914. But five years later, he married his cousin Elsa Löwenthal, and Elsa helped Albert a lot on his job. For example, she had hired Helen Dukas to become Einstein’s lifelong secretary when during Einstein’s long recuperation and she had gone with Einstein wherever Einstein wanted. Einstein felt very warm and happy what his wife did for him.
Besides working on the inventions, Einstein also liked doing some extra-curricular activities or had fun. For example, he loved playing his violin and munching on cookies. Even when he has old, he would play with kids he met on his walk to work, sometimes joining in their water pistol fights. But the most interesting activities that Einstein liked were hiking, sailing and biking. Although he liked challenge himself, he never learned to drive because the thought it was too complicated for him. Anyways, he had relaxed himself besides working.
Einstein had lots of mottoes that give people power to do everything, like “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” and “Science is serious but you can’t be serious all the time.” Also he had said, “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” This motto let the people never give up when facing the problem. And he had said,” If A= success, then the formula is A= X+ Y + Z, where X is ‘work,’ Y is ‘play,’ and Z is ‘keep your mouth shut.’” This motto gave people to understand how can be a successful person. Always remind him he can solve the problem and do whatever he wanted for the problem. Those mottoes also become our mottoes now.
As a whole, all the incredible inventions and ideas Einstein did bring us improvement. Not only in the world of physics, but we have also learned how to be a great person by those mottos. For example, in the past, physicists have already known that lights is a form of energy made of some tiny particles, but he argued that light travels both as a particle and a wave. Therefore, it is getting improvement of energy. Also, he realized the time, distance and mass can change, and it just depends on how fast you move. Also, his mottoes remind us never to give up in finding the answer by asking. Even Einstein thought more about the future than about the past. He tried to make the world a safer, more peaceful place. Although the atom bomb can destroy the world, people are still thankful the nuclear power, radiation therapy, and the theory of relativity also helped astronomers discover pulsars and quasars.
